The Sotiris Felios Collection presents the group exhibition “APOTROPAION” with artists Ileana Arnaoutou, Despina Charitonidi, Anna Gonzalez Noguchi, Natalia Manta and Ariadne Strofylla, curated by Ismene King. The exhibition opens at the art space “16 Fokionos Negri” on Wednesday 9th June 2021 at 4 p.m.

The exhibition forms a new initiative by The Sotiris Felios Collection aiming to support the emerging generation of artists living and working in Greece, following the Collection’s long-standing aid and promotion of contemporary art in Greece and abroad.

The Sotiris Felios Collection invited sculptress and ceramicist Ismene King, whose artworks are part of the Collection, to curate an exhibition with clay as the central material, creating a bridge between the contemporary sculptural practice of working with clay and the ceramic makers of antiquity.

The exhibition “APOTROPAION” consists of five artworks, which have been created specifically for the exhibition, and draw inspiration from the conceptual framework which comes from the ceramic antefix. The ceramic antefix is described as an apotropaic structural element, as well as a symbol of protection. Through their artworks, the artists reflect on ideas and issues on themes such as Protection, Care, Vulnerability, the Home and the Supernatural.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated, bilingual (Greek-English) catalogue with texts by Ismene King, curator of the exhibition and Angeliki Kottaridi, Archaeology PhD.

The art space “16 Fokionos Negri” has taken all necessary measures, following all guidelines for the operation of the space in compliance with the health rules designated by the government according to the instructions of EODY and the National Committee for Public Health Protection.

The maximum number of people allowed in the exhibition space is 20 people.
