The Sotiris Felios Collection. Maria Filopoulou: Intimate Paradise
The Sotiris Felios Collection along with “The other Arcadia” Foundation presents the exhibition “Intimate Paradise” by Maria Filopoulou. The exhibition will open at 16 Fokionos Negri on Wednesday 11th March 2020, at 8 p.m.
“Intimate Paradise” includes 18 large-scale painting compositions and one sculpture, from the Sotiris Felios Collection as well as other private & public art collections, which have been created between 1986 and 2016. In essence, it traces Maria Filopoulou’s journey from her years of study in Paris, to her emergence as a leading artist of her generation, covering some of the most important thematics of her career: interiors, greenhouses, beaches, waterfalls and swimmers. The title of the exhibition refers to the artist’s pursuit of a visible or invisible place of belonging, that will make her feel safe and peaceful.
The viewer will follow Filopoulou’s artistic emancipation of gradually leaving behind the sheltered environment of the Fine Art School of Paris, her studio in Athens and the plastic interiors of greenhouses, in order to wander into the vastness of seascapes and the unsettling currents of waterfalls. This opening towards a new kind of creative life is reflected within the figures starring in her work: from her beginnings as a painter, shown in the 1986 lonely self-portrait, to her later and current work which is filled with dozens of free-flowing bodies that revel in becoming one with nature and water.
The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated, bilingual (Greek-English) catalogue.
