On Saturday 9 December 2023 from 18:00 to 21:00 the solo exhibition of Dimitris Hantzopoulos entitled “Selfies” will be inaugurated at the exhibition space “16 Fokionos Negri“. The show includes 25 sculptures and paintings, created over the last three years.

The exhibition will be inaugurated by H.E. the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

In the new works of Dimitris Hantzopoulos, figures from the world of painting, literature and contemporary culture, as well as from the world of caricatures, which he has been creating over his long career, parade through the new artistic compositions.

Through a paradoxical mixture of materials, wooden and wall constructions, paintings with clay and papier-mâché, the characteristic all-black figures of Dimitris Hantzopoulos’ satirical sketches come to life in three dimensions and create a fantasy setting while in an unexpected way reflect on the effects of digital reality.

Petros Martinidis writes in the catalogue’s foreword:

“Craftmanship and brilliance, paradox and transactions with the fantastical, culminate, (…) everywhere, the painted figures retain their cast shadows. With the additional elements casting their own shadows, by any lighting, the result is a dizzying blend of shadows. (…)Whichever accounts Hantzopoulos might be settling with the “apparitions” of his imagination, in an orgy of “multidimensional shadows”, wandering around among them is a wonderfully weird sensation. Like hanging out with the comic descendants of iambic poetry, and contemporary personalities of stand-up comedy – totally hilarious in their standing up silence.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated, bilingual (Greek-English) catalogue edited by Dimitris Hantzopoulos, designed by Anestis Kyriakidis and including texts by Petros Martinidis and Sotiris Felios.
