Individuality: Works from The Sotiris Felios Collection

The Municipal Art Gallery of Alimos inaugurates the year’s exhibition activities with an impressive exhibition dedicated to “The Art of Portraiture from The Sotiris Felios Collection” The event is organized in collaboration with The “other Arcadia” Foundation and features works by prominent Greek artists such as Tsarouchis, Fasianos, and Botsoglou, alongside works by distinguished painters from the new generation of the Greek visual arts scene.

Individuality is the expression of a face, its particular mood, the way in which the face stands before something, both literally and metaphorically.

From the oldest in age, Alecos Levidis (1944), to the youngest, Louisa Missiou (1981), the figures presented in Alimos, sometimes everyday and sometimes symbolic, become bearers of messages for both the painter and Greek society. Through the particular emphasis on portraits, the collection offers a unique perspective on how Greek painting captures the relationship between the individual, identity, and their social environment. The viewer not only gazes at the model’s expression but also at the creator’s. These are the faces of our history and the living history of art itself.

For the first time in the Alimos Gallery, a section from the emblematic “Nekyia” of Chronis Botsoglou brings the “Necromancer,” his full-length self-portrait, surrounded only by the women of the monumental series. Apart from being foundational to The Sotiris Felios Collection, this work is a “multi-faced Fayum” that seeks immortality for the creator within the “land of the dead” (the term “nekys” means dead, and “Nekyia” was the title of the famous Odyssey rhapsody). While the dark waters of Nekyia reflect the Homeric work, the waters of Alimos reflect a brilliant reservoir of living artistic creation.

This exhibition in Alimos is the first to open the doors of the gallery to a collector, showcasing works from The Sotiris Felios Collection by the following artists:Io Angeli Dimitris Anastasiou, Tasos Aridas, Kalliopi Asargiotaki, Stefanos Daskalakis, Diana Zervaki, Theofilos Katsipanos, Konstantinos Kerestetzis, Leda Contogiannopoulou, Ioanna Kafida, Gerasimos Kotsolakos, Alecos Levidis, Thanassis Makris, Tassos Mantzavinos, Tassos Misouras, Louiza Missiou, Emmanouil Bitsakis, Christos Bokoros, Achilleas Papacostas, Konstantinos Papamichalopoulos, Vassilis Papanikolaou, Kostas Papanikolaou, Giorgos Rorris, Edouard Sacaillan, Nikos Siskos, Antonis Staveris, Dimitris Tataris, Giannis Tsarouchis, Alecos Fassianoss, Maria Filopoulou, Katerina Hadoulou, Dimitris Hantzopoulos, Sandra Christou.
